The teachers’ stories highlight how the literacy achievement and the life chances of many economically disadvantaged, linguistic, and racial minority students are being curtailed and threatened by frequent, non-routine, non-grade promotional school changes. The teachers perceived that transience has a deleterious effect on the oral language, reading, and writing development of students in elementary schools with high levels of transience. This book is based on a qualitative case study that uses Vygotskian sociocultural theory and Freirean critical theory to explore the perspectives of elementary teachers on the impact of transience on literacy. The study reveals both the macro and the micro-level dynamics of transient students' language and literacy learning and demonstrates that the schooling and literacy education of transient students is a social and political issue, and a matter of social justice for those who have little and need much more. The study presents a number of specific recommendations to respond to the challenges associated with the perceived negative impact of transience on literacy.

Reading Achievement in Native Language Literacy Classrooms. Study of Spanish Speaking First Graders
Much research has shown that bilingual students' literacy proficiency in their first and second languages is interdependent across languages. Students learning to read in one language transfer the knowledge and skills of the reading process to read in another language. This study was motivated by questions about how well Spanish-speaking students learning to reading in Spanish, an important first step in attaining cognitive academic language proficiency in Spanish, also read in English. Sixty-three first graders from three native language literacy programs were assessed in both Spanish and English. These students were receiving literacy instruction in Spanish native language literacy classes. This analysis sheds light on native language literacy students reading in their first language and in English and should be especially helpful for educators and researchers working with native language literacy students and programs. Debate is prevalent about the best models for English Language Learners (ELLs) to learn English and reach high levels of learning.

Linking Financial Literacy, Economic Measures and Delayed Gratification. A research project submitted to GIBS, University of Pretoria, South Africa, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MBA
The results show significant differences in FL levels if from different schools, population groups and public vs. private schools, but not across different genders. The study' s main aim was to measure financial literacy (FL) levels in South African (SA) high school learners. Differences in FL levels were identified for different demographic and psychographics and between 4 categories. Significant differences exist between different psychographics and between FL categories. An unclear relationship exists between FL and propensities for debt, saving and spending, suggesting further research. A quantitative survey was conducted on 12th grade learners of different population groups and genders in 7 SA schools. FL and ability to delay gratification are unrelated. Results should enable SA business, educational settings and government to understand the impact of demographic, psychographic and educational differences on FL and need for improvement in FL. A model is proposed relating SA FL to major conclusions from the null hypotheses. SA FL levels are poor and below US youth. Other aims were to compare SA and US FL levels, and to assess if FL and ability to delay gratification are related.
