Distributed operating systemsMost of this time is due to unavoidable protocol handling on both ends, rather than the time the bits spend on the wire. Thus to optimize performance, one often has to minimize the number of messages. The difficulty with this strategy is that the best way to gain performance is to have many activities running in parallel on different processors, but doing so requires sending many messages. (Another solution is to do all the work on one machine, but that is hardly appropriate in a distributed system.) One possible way out is to pay considerable attention to the grain size of all computations. Starting up a small computation remotely, such as adding two integers, is rarely worth it, because the communication overhead dwarfs the extra CPU cycles gained. On the other hand, starting up a long compute-bound job remotely may be worth the trouble.
