What made their technique true collage, however, was the juxtaposition of quotations and unrelated melodies, either by layering them or by moving between them in quick succession, as in a film montage sequence. The origin of sound collage can be traced back to the works of Charles Ives and the symphonies of Gustav Mahler. When layering melodies, both composers also pioneered the technique of using of different tempi for different sections of the orchestra at the same time, a technique which creates the illusion that two distinct pieces of music are being performed simultaneously.

Он также является автором большей части композиций, представленных в альбоме: Plastic Beetle, Free Now и Made Up. Первые две собраны из фрагментов студийных разговоров между битлами, кусков гитарных соло, не вошедших в альбомы, и т.Pп. Создание Made Up более занимательно. Взяв с собой магнитофон, осенью 1999 года Маккартни вышел на улицы Ливерпуля и стал записывать голоса первых встречных, задавая им различные вопросы. В законченном виде все это звучит на фоне ультрамодных синтезаторных сэпплов. Композицию Real Gone Dub Made in Manifest in the Vortex of the Eternal Now написал Мартин Гловер. (Он выступает под псевдонимом "Youth". И если вы помните, это коллега Пола по группе The Fireman.)
