The monastery has today 50 monks. While the southern coast of Athos is quite rugged in general, the particular site upon which the monastery is built is exceptionally harsh. The monastery is located in the southern coast of the Athos peninsula, between the Athonite port of Dafni and Osiou Grigoriou monastery. Simonopetra ranks thirteenth in the hierarchy of the Athonite monasteries. It is built on top of a single huge rock, practically hanging from a cliff 330 meters over the sea. Hovhannavank Monastery
It is situated atop a steep gorge carved by the Kasagh river. The monastery' s title originates from the combination of the name Hovhan and the word “vank,” which in Armenian means “monastery. ” The monastery was dedicated to John the Baptist, whom Armenians venerate as their patron-saint[citation needed]. The monastery stands on the edge of the Qasakh River Canyon, and its territory is adjacent to the village of Ohanavan. The oldest part of the monastery is the single nave basilica of St. Karapet (i. e. Holy Forerunner, John the Baptist) that was founded at the beginning of the fourth century by St. Gregory the Enlightener, who baptized Armenia into the world’s first Christian nation. The wooden roof of the early church was replaced in 554 AD with a thatch cover, and the basilica itself underwent profound renovation between 1652 and 1734. Alchi Monastery
Alchi Monastery or Alchi Gompa is a Buddhist monastery, known more as a monastic complex (chos-' khor) of temples in Alchi village in the Leh District, of the Indian state under the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council of Jammu and Kashmir. The complex comprises four separate settlements in the Alchi village in the lower Ladakh region with monuments dated to different periods. Of these four hamlets, Alchi monastery is said to be the oldest and most famous. It is administered by the Likir Monastery. Alchi is also part of the three villages (all in lower Ladakh region) which constitute the ‘Alchi group of monuments’; the other two villages adjoining Alchi are the Mangdu and Sundang Chung (now in Zanskar district). The monuments in these three villages are stated to be of “unique style and workmanship’, but the Alchi monastic complex is the best known The monastery complex was built, according to local tradition, by the great translator Guru Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055 AD) around 1000 AD, although inscriptions in the preserved monuments ascribe it to a Tibetan noble called Kal-dan Shes-rab later in the 11th century. Drepung Monastery
Drepung Monastery (wylie: ' bras spungs dgon),(literally “Rice Heap” monastery), located at the foot of Mount Gephel, is one of the "great three" Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet. The other two are Ganden and Sera. Drepung is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and is located on the Gambo Utse mountain, 5 kilometers from the western suburb of Lhasa. Freddie Spencer Chapman reported, after his 1936-37 trip to Tibet, that Drepung was at that time the largest monastery in the world, and housed 7,700 monks, "but sometimes as many as 10,000 monks. " It was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden (1397–1449), one of Tsongkhapa' s main disciples, and it was named after the sacred abode in South India of Shridhanyakataka.
