The Ganges River is the most important source for water resources for both Bangladesh & India, and resulting in many conflicts arising between these two countries. Farakka Barrage is a low height dam, constructed mainly to divert water back into the Hoogly-Bhagirathi channel. The first water sharing agreement regarding Farakka was signed between India & Bangladesh, on 5/11/1977, for the duration of 5 years. After 14 years, an agreement between Bangladesh & India on Sharing the Ganges water "Ganges Water Sharing Treaty" signed on 12 December 1996. Water is a source of conflict, mistrusts, and disputes between the three riparian states of Ganges basin Indian diversions of Ganges water through Farakka barrage, is a long-term source of tremendous political tensions, mistrust and non- cooperation between India and Bangladesh. Flooding in monsoon and reduction of flow on dry season causes tremendous socio-economic & environmental loss for Bangladesh like agriculture, fishery, navigation, industry & vegetation. It has severely affected the downstream river regime of the Ganges- Padma in Bangladesh.

Inter-group conflicts in the Awash Valley of Ethiopia. an Exploration in to the Afar-Karrayu Conflict
But scarcity- ‘who gets to eat and who does not' can be a necessary condition for violent inter-ethnic conflict but cannot be a sufficient condition for the appearance of violent inter ethnic conflicts at least in the Afar and Karrayu of north eastern Ethiopia. The two communities practice both pastoralist and agro-pastoralist as a livelihood. The Afar and Karrayu land is located to the north eastern part of Ethiopia. For this purpose qualitative method was employed. The study is mainly aimed at exploiting the nature of the Afar-Karrayu relations from 1991 to the present and to uncover the interplay of causes, structures and actors in the conflict. It also intended to assess the role of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms the groups have been using and state interventions to resolve and/or manage the conflicts. The Afar and Karrayu pastoralists have had a long history of relationship which is marked by cordial coexistence and serious conflict. The Afar-Karrayu conflict is explained in terms of competition for scarce resources.
