Words shift from one part of speech to another by the process of conversion... (Kennedy 1935: 8) Термин "conversion" был впервые употреблен Суитом в его "New English Grammar" еще в 1892 году. Кеннеди, в дальнейшем представление о "подвижном" характере частей речи в современном английском языке, их гибкости получило всеобщее признание: "Since that time (1892) there has been a more general recognition of the shifting character of the Modern English parts of speech and of the almost puzzling flexibility that this one characteristic of current English gives to the language. (там же: 8) Суит также дает определение предложения: "A sentence is a word or group of words capable of expressing a complete thought or meaning. (Sweet 1892: 155) Авторы современной грамматики английского языка Р. Кверк и др. уже не ограничиваются понятием предложения, и дают определение текста: "a text unlike a sentence - is not a grammatical unit but rather a semantic and even a pragmatic one... A text is a stretch of language which seems appropriately coherent in actual use".
